Semaglutide vs cagrilintide

Two different satiety pathways, usually discussed as a pair rather than a choice. One is an approved drug on its own; the other is mostly studied alongside it.

Semaglutide acts on the GLP-1 receptor. Cagrilintide is an amylin analogue working on a separate satiety pathway, which is exactly why most of the literature combines them instead of comparing them.

Cagrilintide's evidence largely comes from that combination. Studied alone it is a less complete picture than semaglutide's, which has a full phase 3 programme and approvals behind it.

Things worth knowing

  • Gastrointestinal effects limit the dose of both. Titrate two of them at once and you will not be able to tell which one is responsible, or which one to pull back.
  • The combination studied in trials was a co-formulated product. Two separate vials at self-chosen doses is not that product.
