Evidence level

Also written level of evidence, preclinical, clinical

The category of human evidence behind a compound, from preclinical through to approved. Stated on every profile here as a category, not an adjective.

The five levels used here are preclinical, early human, clinical, approved elsewhere, and approved. They describe how far a compound has got through the process that establishes whether something works and what it does to people. Not how promising it is, and not how much has been published about it.

The distinction that matters most is between preclinical and anything above it. Preclinical means cells and animals; it is where most of this category sits, and a large volume of preclinical work is still preclinical work.

Volume of papers and weight of evidence are not the same measurement. BPC-157 has a great deal published about it and no completed human trial.
