Assessing quality and reading a COA

Research chemicals carry no manufacturing standard. What a certificate of analysis actually tells you, and what a useless one looks like.

This is the uncomfortable part of the category. Compounds sold as research chemicals are not manufactured, tested, or labelled to any pharmaceutical standard. There is no regulator checking that the vial contains what the label says — in the amount the label says — without anything else in it.

That makes third-party testing the only real evidence available about a given batch. It is also precisely why a fabricated certificate is worth so much to a seller.

What a meaningful COA contains

A certificate of analysis is a laboratory report on a specific batch of material. The word 'specific' is doing the work: a document that cannot be matched to the vial in your hand tells you nothing about the vial in your hand.

  • A batch or lot number that matches your vial

    Without this, the certificate could be from any batch, including one that no longer exists.

  • The testing laboratory named, with a date

    An independent laboratory that can be looked up, not an unnamed 'third party'.

  • Both identity and purity reported

    Mass spectrometry establishes that it is the right molecule; HPLC establishes how much of the sample is that molecule. You want both. A highly pure sample of the wrong compound is still the wrong compound.

  • Purity reported without a method

    A percentage with no stated technique is a number, not a measurement.

  • No batch number anywhere on the document

    The most common form of a meaningless certificate.

  • An image of a certificate with no verifiable source

    A screenshot of a PDF is trivially edited. Where a laboratory offers verification of its own reports, use it.

What a certificate does not tell you

A COA covers the sample that was sent to the laboratory. It does not establish that every vial in the batch is identical, that the vial you received was stored correctly in transit, or that the material is sterile.

It also says nothing at all about whether the compound is safe or effective in humans. Those are separate questions, answered by clinical trials, and for most compounds discussed here those trials do not exist.

What the vial itself tells you

Before any certificate, look at what arrived. Correctly freeze-dried powder forms a white cake covering the bottom of the vial. A cake that has collapsed, melted, or fused to the glass suggests the vial got warm in transit, and refrigerating it afterwards does not undo that.

Each compound page carries the specific appearance notes for that compound — including cases where an unusual colour is expected — not a fault.

The vendor vetting checklist

A scoring sheet you can open next to a vendor's site — weighted so a batch-matched certificate counts for more than a slick website, with a tab for comparing two sellers on the same criteria.

Terms used here

Sterile technique
The handling that keeps a vial and an injection free of contamination: clean hands, an alcohol-wiped stopper, a fresh needle every time.
Research chemical
A legal label, not a quality grade. It describes what a seller is permitted to sell you, and says nothing about what is in the vial.
Vial
The small sealed glass container a peptide is sold in, holding a stated mass of freeze-dried powder under a rubber stopper.
Evidence level
The category of human evidence behind a compound, from preclinical through to approved. Stated on every profile here as a category, not an adjective.
Lyophilised
Freeze-dried. The process used to turn a peptide solution into a stable dry powder for shipping and storage.
COA
A certificate of analysis: a laboratory report stating what a batch of material was found to contain.
